Process Paper
My National History Day this year will be a webpage done by myself. The topic of this project will be Valley Forge and the development of the Continental Army. I chose this because the Revolutionary War seemed like an interesting topic to conduct an NHD project on and would be the best topic upon which to convey this year’s theme.
I have started research on this project by visiting the East Shore Area Library. I have gotten five books from there including two primary sources. In addition to libraries I have also found web resources on the topic from the Bishop McDevitt Library page and have gotten photos as well from various online resources. These sources have provided good information for the project to be sufficiently displayed as best as possible.
A webpage will be the means for producing and presenting the research for my NHD. I have not done a webpage before but was suggested by a friend and decided to give it a try. It seems like a good way to be creative in presenting the project and much better than the board I was initially going to do. I went onto Weebly.com and created the website for the project and have been working on it and piecing it together.
This year’s theme of “Turning Points in History” could not be better displayed than with the topic of Valley Forge and the Development of the Continental Army. The establishment of the army to fight the British for our freedom resulted in the Revolutionary War. This war pushed the troops under Washington’s control to their limits and under poor conditions they had to make winter camp at Valley Forge. Valley Forge was a turning point in the war; it is there that Baron von Steuben arrives. He was a Prussian military officer that would come to the aid of the Continental Army in the form of training and drilling the army. After surviving Valley Forge and benefiting from proper training the troops were able to turn the tide in the war and eventually win after the siege of Yorktown culminated in British surrender and American victory. This turning point at Valley Forge and the initial development of the Continental Army itself were vital in establishing America as a free nation. This turning point was one of largest in shaping the world we live in today and is why I choose it to relate the theme of “Turning Points in History.”
